Chelmsford City Opera (then Chelmsford Opera) was formed in 1971 by Cynthia Scott, a local singing teacher, with the aim of encouraging local interest in opera. Our first president was the late Elizabeth Harwood who often attended performances to give encouragement and advice.

In 2012, to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Chelmsford was awarded City Status. To show how delighted¬†and proud we were, we decided to change our name to Chelmsford City Opera. We also redesigned our logo which now features a diamond and the colours of the union flag.

We now aim to give experience to singers who might not normally be accepted for principal roles, whether this is because of age, training, work schedules or simply lack of experience. Our members then form a high standard chorus and some, who want to take on roles.

Our current president is the internationally acclaimed operatic conductor Alexander Ingram. Alex continues the tradition of attending our performances if his schedule permits. We are very grateful for his advice and encouragement.

Our present Musical Director is Gerald Hindes, who over the past year has lead the group in performances of operatic pieces by Mozart, Offenbach and J. Strauss. The group is planning for the future, beyond their December performance of Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas,” and is keen to meet new singers to join them in performing operatic music in the central Essex area. As a group we have a tradition of providing opportunities for our own members to take on solo parts, but also to welcome guest performers- this year has already seen several stars of the future take leading parts, including Rebecca Silverman and Huw Montague- Rendall.

Chelmsford City Opera would all be keen to hear from any sponsors who might help fund their performances, or would wish to hire their services for performances of operatic music. Please contact Gerald Hindes to discuss any such matters.
